The RSA course content covers the legal requirements for a person to work in a bar or restaurant serving alcohol. It focuses on the areas of identifying intoxicated customers, customer service with attention to refusal of service to patrons, compliance with legal issues and assisting customers to drink sensibly. This course is designed for staff members who are currently working in the industry or intend to work in the hospitality industry. The unit incorporates the knowledge requirements, under state and territory liquor licensing law, for employees engaged in the sale or service of alcohol.
Course Delivery and Assessment
The unit applies to all staff involved in the sale, service, including promotional service and supply of alcohol in licensed premises. It can include food and beverage attendants; packaged liquor salespersons; winery, brewery and distillery cellar door staff; delivery services and supplier sales representatives. The unit also applies to security staff who monitor customer behaviour and to the licensee who is ultimately responsible for responsible service of alcohol (RSA) management.
Entry Requirement
Minimum Age Requirement:
17 years or older at commencement of course.
Minimum English Language Requirement:
- have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills as tested through a language, literacy and numeracy assessment. Students will need to achieve ACSF level 3 for reading, writing, numeracy and oral communication to enter the course.
Minimum Academic Requirement:
Completion of senior high school to the Australian Year 10 or equivalent

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning
All applicants can apply for credit transfer of units that they have already been issued with from another RTO. Additionally, they may wish to apply for recognition of prior learning gained form their past formal and informal learning pathway from other training, work or life experience.
