This qualification reflects the role of a security officer, responsible for maintaining safety and security by patrolling, protecting or guarding property while unarmed, and screening entry, monitoring behaviour and removing persons from premises. Security officers may work alone or work in a team environment under general supervision, operating with limited autonomy and judgement to complete routine but variable tasks, with some accountability and responsibility for their own outputs, work and learning.

Our goal is to provide you with the information and skills to become an effective and efficient security professional. Role-plays, scenarios, case studies, class discussions and real-life experiences provide students with a stimulating and fun learning environment. 

Entry Requirements

 

Age Requirement:

Students must be at least 18 years of age. Students must also have completed Year 12 or equivalent.

Physical Requirement

The physical requirements of a Security Guard include the ability to deal with various security threats and challenges and perform physical tasks on a daily basis. For instance; ejecting a person from property who may be causing harm to a person or property/assets; perform first aid; good vision to have a strong sense of observation and quick response to particular situations and the ability to move quickly; and the physical ability to work on your feet for a whole shift patrolling sites, or positioned at a gate checking people in and out. Physical fitness is a requirement of this job role.
Therefore, students must be:

  • Physically strong and fit, including being able to quickly respond to visual and auditory cues in the environment.
  • Able to perform physical tasks on a daily basis.
  • Able to work on their feet for extended periods of time

Minimum English Language Requirement:

Students must meet one of the following:

  • Score a 6 or above on the International English Language Testing System
  • Score a 52 or above on the Pearson Test of English Academic
  • Satisfactorily completed ELICOS to at least Upper Intermediate level

OR

Provide either of the following evidence of English Language competence:

  • That they were educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country
  • That they have completed their Year 12 or equivalent in English Language

Students will also need to pass the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment conducted by Phia Education Trainer/Assessor, which includes a written test and interview to complete the verbal component of the test. For international students applying from their home country, this will be completed during a video call interview. For all students applying within Australia, the test will be completed during an interview at the Phia Education Campus.

It provides a pathway to further learning and work in various security roles and settings, including, but not limited to:

  • Armed guarding
  • Cash-in-transit
  • Close protection
  • Control room operations
  • Guard dog handling.

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

All applicants can apply for credit transfer of units that they have already been issued with from another RTO. Additionally, they may wish to apply for recognition of prior learning gained form their past formal and informal learning pathway from other training, work or life experience.
